Key West Firefighters Complete Additional Training as Fires Continue to Rage in California. How Leesfield & Partners is Providing Aid.

Amid horrific wildfires that have ravaged homes, wreaking havoc on the lives of thousands of Californians, Key West firefighters have completed additional training to improve their emergency response.

Firefighters in Key West recently completed their Florida Urban Search and Rescue Confined Space Technical Rescue training course, a lesson that teaches how to safely and effectively get people out of complicated fire situations. The course focuses on hazard analysis, risk assessment, training levels of personnel and the availability of external resources.

Providing Aid

Leesfield & Partners and The Leesfield Family Foundation are providing direct aid to California’s emergency responders who are working to put out the flames raging throughout Los Angeles. As of Tuesday, over two dozen people have been killed as a result of the flames. Their heart-wrenching stories include two people who were trying to save the homes where they raised their children and a man whose son with cerebral palsy could not be evacuated. Over 13,600 structures have been destroyed, displacing tens of thousands of people.

The dangers these fires present has weighed heavy on the hearts of people in the U.S. who have watched the continuous damages unfold on phone and television screens since Jan. 7.  Among the terrified viewers is Ira Leesfield, the Managing Partner and Founder of Leesfield & Partners and the Chairman of The Foundation. Mr. Leesfield has provided assistance to first responders in California and is urging anyone who can support these firefighters to do so as well. Mr. Leesfield’s famous digital sign, which sits in front of the firm’s Miami office on U.S. 1 and is viewable to thousands of South Florida commuters daily, has regularly shown slides urging the public to help California during this time. Additionally, Mr. Leesfield has worked to rally support for California via social media.

Leesfield & Partners

Leesfield & Partners has routinely worked to achieve the best possible outcome for injured clients. In nearly five decades of personal injury practice, the firm has secured millions for injured clients and grieving families. In that time, the firm has served clients injured as the result of terrifying explosion incidents, in horrific burn situations and even in burn situations from the negligence of doctors in the operating room.

While no one can remain entirely prepared to offset all dangerous situations, there are several key steps that property owners and managers must take. The Florida Fire Prevention Code, for instance, is a set of regulations that apply in both residential and commercial buildings. These standards mirror those upheld by the National Fire Protection Association and include codes such as the requirement of marked fire exits, smoke detectors, fire alarms and sprinkler systems in buildings.

If a property owner or management company fails to ensure that these measures are taken into account, then a premises liability claim may be made, stating that a property owner is liable for damages as the result of a fire. Their failure to comply with these safety standards – and their neglect in taking the necessary precautions to protect tenants, employees, or visitors from fire hazards – would constitute negligence, as property owners have a legal duty to ensure a safe environment for all individuals on their premises

Previous Fire Cases

The firm previously represented a client who was injured in a fire as the result of a company’s negligence and secured $600,000 for that client’s injuries.

For a client who was burned in the operating room while undergoing a medical procedure, Leesfield & Partners secured $600,000.

In an explosion that caused significant burns to our client, the firm secured a $3.25 million recovery.

Leesfield & Partners settled a case of a grill explosion for $2 million. The client in that case suffered third-degree burns as a result.

In the case of a construction site burn incident, the firm secured $862,000 for the injured client.

In a tragic case involving a fire from a defective TV set at a family’s condo, Leesfield & Partners secured a $2.95 million award. The family lost their 13-year-old daughter as a result of the fire and their patriarch, the girl’s father, suffered horrific burns to over 30% of his body while trying to save the child from the flames.
